The 21st of June is just a week away, and with temperatures soaring, summer is close enough to touch! Here at NYC Wholesale Diamonds our president Keith Saxe has been helping clients deal with issues that arise from not being prepared to care for their treasured jewelry for over a quarter century. Here is some extremely useful information that will help prevent any issues before they occur.

Weekend getaways, jaunts to the beach, and full-fledged vacations are perks that pretty much come with the territory during the summer months, so it’s no wonder that summer fashion tips such as what to wear, what to pack, what to buy—are at the forefront of our minds right now.

One thing, though, that’s not quite as readily on our radar is the idea of jewelry, and how the summer months might affect our pieces. Namely, how we can protect our beloved rings, jewelry, necklaces, and earrings from the season’s elements, and how we can keep them secure while jetting off somewhere sun-filled.

Our jewelry can take a serious bruising when exposed to summer activities such as lounging in the sand, applying suntan lotion, and traveling. Whether your summer plans include a weekend trip or a week abroad. Here are some helpful hints to keep in mind while you enjoy the beauty of summer:

1. Sunbathe without your Gems
Sunscreen can coat gemstones, which reduces refractive and reflective light. Essentially, this means your stones won’t be as brilliant or bling-y. To avoid this, leave your fine pieces at home if you’re heading to the beach or the pool for the day, and be sure clean them regularly all summer. Check NYC Diamond Blog’s post for tips on regular Diamond Jewelry maintenance.

 2. Organization is key when traveling.
When jumbled together, your jewelry doesn’t always get along. For example, a diamond can scratch a pearl, and a bracelet can get caught on a necklace, so always pack pieces in individual soft cloth pouches or lined jewelry boxes to prevent scratching, dulling, and the dreaded tangling of chains.

3. Keep it safe.
When selecting a hotel, be sure that safe deposit boxes are available. Never leave fine jewelry unattended in a hotel room, a rental car, or on a lounge chair—even if you’re just popping over to the bar for a mojito.

4. Shopping for something new? Do your research.
Oftentimes, vacation destinations are also prime shopping destinations, so if you get the urge to commemorate your trip with a new fine jewelry purchase make sure you’re buying from a jeweler that’s been in business for several years. When in doubt, check a retailer’s reputation and rating with the Better Business Bureau and ask for an appraisal. The appraisal should always have the store’s letterhead, and a clear signature of a member of store management.

5. Before you go away, be sure your jewelry is adequately insured.
If you decide to bring an especially valuable piece on vacation—perhaps your engagement ring, a pricey watch, or a family heirloom—always be sure it is fully insured. Always obtain insurance through your homeowners or renters policy, it is safe and more affordable than you would imagine.

NYCWD is so grateful for another 5 Star Review.

Thank you Michael B., for our latest review on Google!

%Jeweler NYC %NYC Wholesale Diamonds“In my experience, Keith doesn’t just sell people diamonds–he becomes a partner in helping you find exactly what you’re looking for. I’ve now gone to him on multiple occasions, including when I was looking for an engagement ring, a wedding ring and a push gift (the natural progression …of jewelry-buying life). Each time, Keith showed me multiple options without being “salesman-y” or upselling me into something I didn’t want. In fact, he couldn’t have been further from those things–he truly wanted to find me the perfect piece. I wasn’t all that knowledgeable coming in, especially when it came to choosing an engagement ring, and expected to feel completely intimidated. That wasn’t the case at all upon meeting Keith–he was patient, instructive and personable. And when I needed a push gift quickly because our baby was born early, Keith was able to get it within a day. I can’t recommend his services enough and I know I will be going to see him for years to come.”

Historically, pearls have been used as an adornment for centuries.

They were one of the favorite gem materials of the Roman Empire; later in Tudor England, the 1500s were known as the pearl age.  Pearls are unique as they are the only gems from living sea creatures and require no faceting or polishing to reveal their natural beauty. In the early 1900s, the first successful commercial culturing of round saltwater pearls began. Since the 1920s, cultured pearls have almost completely replaced natural pearls in the market. Pearl is the wonderful birthstone for June.

Pearls are the perfect gift idea for so many occasions including anniversary, birthday, graduation, and as a ‘push gift. A strand of pearls as a necklace is elegant and sexy all at once. NYC Wholesale Diamonds carries a wide selection of Pearl Necklaces, as well as Pearl and Diamond Bracelets, Earrings and Rings.

A giant pink diamond has become the most expensive jewel ever sold at auction, fetching $71.2 million at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong on Tuesday.

Clocking in at 59.60 carats, the Pink Star was the largest polished diamond ever to go on the auction block.

The winning bid came from Hong Kong jewelry firm Chow Tai Fook. The company’s chairman, Henry Cheng Kar-Shun, phoned in the bid.

The final price was 553 million Hong Kong dollars, including the buyer’s premium, or auction house charge.

This isn’t the first time the Pink Star has gone up for sale.

In 2013, it sold for a record $83 million at a Sotheby’s auction in Geneva, but the buyer, New York-based diamond cutter Isaac Wolf, defaulted on the deal. Sotheby’s ended up saddled with the expensive stone.

The most important diamond sales usually take place in Geneva.

The Oppenheimer Blue, which previously held the record for the most expensive polished diamond (successfully) sold at auction, fetched $57.5 million at a Christie’s auction in Geneva last May.

Soon after, Sotheby’s tried to auction off the Lesedi La Rona, the world’s second biggest diamond, in the Swiss city. The uncut stone was expected to go for at least $70 million, but failed to find a buyer.

Sotheby’s tried a new city for the Pink Star this time around.

The auction house wrote “a new chapter in its story by offering it for sale in Hong Kong, now a global epicenter for the world’s wealthy,” said Tobias Kormind of 77 Diamonds, an online diamond jewelry seller.

It took nearly two years to cut the Pink Star from a rough diamond. It first appeared in public in 2003 and later became part of an exhibit at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, home of the famous 45.52 carat blue Hope Diamond. It was also displayed at the Natural History Museum in London.

Tuesday’s winning bid surpassed the previous world auction record for a pink diamond — $46.16 million for the 24.78 carat Graff Pink, sold at Sotheby’s in Geneva in 2010.

Chow Tai Fook has renamed its new possession the CTF Pink Star in memory of the company’s founder and to commemorate the brand’s 88th anniversary.*

NYC Wholesale Diamond Hoops, See the Difference

As we like to say, “We’ll jump through hoops for our customers, and we make them, too”%Jeweler NYC %NYC Wholesale Diamonds

Diamond Hoops make a great gift for any occasion and we make them in all sizes, carat weights and colors!  One special feature that makes our diamond hoops a step above the rest is the hinged snap backs we use on all of our hoops.  The post snaps into the hinge to lock into place and is only released when the lever is pushed.  These secure backs add peace of mind, no added weight to the earring, and a seamless visual flow.%Jeweler NYC %NYC Wholesale Diamonds%Jeweler NYC %NYC Wholesale Diamonds
